Your AC’s primary job is to keep your home in Frisco, TX, comfortable, but in certain dire circumstances, it may end up overheating. It’s important to understand why this happens and to prevent the issues that may arise from it. Here are a few reasons why your AC might be overheating.
Dirty Filters
Excessively dirty air filters may ultimately decrease the amount of airflow through your AC system. Of course, this can lower your home’s indoor air quality, but it will also make your AC more prone to overheating.
Firstly, that lack of airflow will prevent your AC from effectively expelling the heat that it extracts from your home. As a result, it will cause your AC’s performance to decline, leading it to eat up more power.
Both of these things will cause overheating. This is why you must remember to either clean or replace your filters every 90 days or as otherwise needed.
Too Little Refrigerant
As it alternately evaporates and compresses, refrigerant absorbs heat from the air in your home and deposits that heat outside. Therefore, without refrigerant, your AC simply cannot do any cooling work.
With too little refrigerant, the pressure level in your AC will drop, and your AC’s compressor will need to work inordinately hard to maintain the previous pressure. As a result, the compressor can overheat.
Lastly, since your AC’s cooling ability will drop after a refrigerant leak, the system may begin short cycling, or it may simply absorb more power in an effort to improve its performance, causing general overheating. Refrigerant is highly toxic. Do not try to replace it on your own.
Age
Lastly, your AC may simply be too old. As your system ages, its parts will break down, and efficiency will correspondingly fall. If your AC has been in service for more than about 15 years, overheating may become a constant problem.
