A2L Refrigerant Change in Dallas, TX

Learn About the New A2L Refrigerant Change

September 10, 2024

To reduce the impact of refrigerants on the environment, the HVAC industry is transitioning to A2L refrigerants over the next 15 years. The A2L refrigerant change will apply to all heat pumps and air conditioners. While the full phase-out will take years to implement, the manufacture and import of R-410A will stop right away. Here’s what homeowners in Dallas, TX, need to know.

Why Is This A2L Refrigerant Change Happening?

There are major code changes happening this year. The goal of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to reduce hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants by 85% by 2036. This 15-year phase-out is being gradually implemented, so buying and using older refrigerants will become increasingly difficult over the next decade.

Is My R-410A Refrigerant Obsolete?

In 2025, R-410A will no longer be used for new equipment. This phase-out was originally supposed to happen in 2023, but the final date was changed. In 2025, any refrigerant with a global warming potential (GWP) of 750 or greater will be completely banned from being manufactured or imported.

Fortunately, your air conditioner won’t become obsolete. R-410A can still be purchased, but new R-410A can’t be manufactured or imported into the country. While the price will gradually be increased, you can still get your air conditioner repaired and recharged.

Most air conditioners last for 15 to 20 years. Since the final phase-out isn’t until 2036, the air conditioners our HVAC installation experts install this year can complete their full lifespan before they must be replaced with a model that uses different refrigerants. During this time period, we can continue to recharge air conditioners.
